Acupuncture

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is the ancient Chinese practice of inserting thin, fine needles into specific points along the body to regulate the flow of energy (Qi) and restore balance. This is believed to stimulate the body's natural healing abilities and alleviate various ailments. Though there are hundreds of acupunctutre points on the human body, the few points used in a standard acupuncture treatment will be chosen by the practitioner to fit the patient's unique needs.

Common Question: "Does Acupuncture Hurt?"

One of the most commonly asked questions regarding acupuncture is "Does it hurt?" The needles used in treatment are very thin and often insertion of the needle is barely felt, with the patient experiencing only a slight prick or tingling sensation.

There are however, risks of minor aches and pains especially when needles are inserted in more sensitive areas (for example, certain points along the hands and feet or if a point feels particularly achy with massage it will often be more sentitive to needling). Acupuncture also carries inate risk that the practitioner may hit a nerve or blood vessel. This may lead to discomfort, itching, and or slight bruising.

Once the needles are in and placed comfortably, the presence of the needles should be barely perceptible allowing for a relaxing and restful treatment experience. Even with the needles in patients very often fall asleep.
